Social Media Image Sizes – The Up-to-Date Guide

Social Media Image Sizes - A Complete Guide

Whether it’s for an event, product, service, tips or even a meme, it’s not always easy to get your content to look right on social media platforms. But when you think you’ve got all the image sizes down, there seems to be yet another update that changes the image size.

And then you find out trying to find the correct image sizes is harder than finding the Holy Grail. Rest easy, we’ve got you covered. This is our always up-to-date guide on image sizes for social media.

Why Should I Use the Right Social Media Sizes?

Since developing a brand takes work to get right, it makes sense to spend a little extra time to get your hard work seen in the way you designed it.

Otherwise, you will likely find your images will be cropped, cutting out part of your brand’s message from view. The knock-on effect is that your brand could be perceived as unprofessional.

As a guide, the px measurement refers to pixels, the measurement of screen space and is used in any image editor.

Facebook

Facebook Profile Picture Size – 170px x 170px

A Facebook profile picture will use the full image size of 170 x 170px on desktop, but 128 x 128px on smartphones.

If your profile picture is a logo and contains text, use the PNG format. The format uses lossless compression, which means it will compress your file without losing quality. This will maintain sharpness of the text of your logo in your image compared to formats like JPEG that can blur and pixelate.

Facebook Cover Photo Size – 851px x 315px

To avoid Facebook’s compression, it’s recommended to keep your Facebook cover photo file size to under 100KB.

It displays at 820 x 312px on desktop and 640 x 360px on smartphones.

If you’re unable to keep to the recommended size, then at a minimum the Facebook cover photo size should be at least 400 x 150px.

Facebook Post and Timeline Photo Size – 1200px x 630px

For posts and timeline photos, Facebook uses a 1.91:1 aspect ratio and will automatically resize and reformat images to be 500 pixels wide to keep to the ratio.

You can, however, eliminate or minimise pixilation and/or slow loading times by using the recommended size of 1200 x 630px or use the minimum size of 600 x 315px.

Facebook Event Cover Photo Size – 1200px x 628px

Facebook event cover photo sizes uses a 2:1 approximate aspect ratio, hence the recommended size of 1200 x 628px.

Note that you can’t change the size of your event’s photo once it’s been added to the event page.

Facebook 360 Degree and Panorama Photo Size – Up to 135 Million Pixels

Facebook uses computer algorithms to recognise and automatically process 360-degree photos using metadata found, but this process requires photos to have been taken with 360-ready devices.

While it can be up to 135 million pixels in size, Facebook 360-degree and panorama photos should be at least 30,000 pixels in size.

They’ll also need to be under 45MB for JPEGs and under 60MB for PNGs. Note that Facebook recommends JPEGs for 360 photos.

Facebook Stories Photo Sizes – 1080px x 1920px

Facebook Stories targets smartphone users, so are designed with phone screens in mind. As a result, it uses an aspect ratio of 9:16.

If you’re post on Facebook Stories features text, leave 300 pixels at the top and bottom of your image. This will prevent your message being disturbed by your profile picture.

If you can’t use the recommended size, then at least don’t use an image width smaller than 500 pixels.
